Fresh attempt to cut TV fees

SSG/SSR

“200 francs is enough” - that’s the name of a new initiative being launched by the right wing Swiss People’s Party.

It aims to cut the fee paid by each household to the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation.

Currently the fee is CHF 335 a year.

A previous attempt to abolish the fee altogether, the so called ‘No Billag’ initiative, failed spectacularly with over 71% saying no in March 2018.

There are hopes this less extreme vote will be more palatable.

The head of the Swiss people’s Party, Marco Chiesa, says the new amount will still mean the corporation will get a billion francs a year – which he says is enough for news and culture coverage.

He says sports fans already pay a subscription to watch their favorite team.

But the public broadcaster says if the fee was cut, it couldn’t maintain its current decentralized structure covering all the different language regions.
