French strikes will affect transport links

Major industrial action is planned for France today – and it will affect Switzerland.

The demonstrations are being labelled as ‘block everything’. They’re in protest at government plans to bring in an austerity programme to cut the country’s EUR 3.3 trn debt.

It’s being met with massive resistance.

The action will affect train and plane links between France and Switzerland and road blocks could hit border crossings.

SWISS International Airlines say they’ve already cancelled today’s flight from Geneva to Nice.

Airline passengers are being advised to check with their carrier if flying to France today.

In addition, French air traffic controllers have a strike planned for next week. That’s expected to ground hundreds of flights and affect routes that simply cross French airspace.
