The former leader of Kazakhstan could soon be living on the shores of Lake Geneva.

81-year-old Nursultan Nazarbayev ran the country with an iron fist from 1990 to 2019. Although he won 5 presidential elections – international observers say the votes failed to meet international standards.

He was chairman of the country’s Security Council until he stepped down a few days ago following demonstrations in the streets which killed over 200, injured more than 4,000 with 10,000 arrests.

Russia has sent in troops in an effort to stem the uprising.

It’s thought he may join his daughter who lives on a sprawling property in Anières in canton Geneva with her Russian oligarch husband.

The mansion cost more than CHF 70m. The purchase triggered investigations into money laundering by Swiss prosecutors.
