Biological particles like pollen and bacteria from forests can help trigger heavy rainfall, according to a new Swiss study.
Researchers at EPFL in Lausanne found that these natural elements play a key role in cloud formation and ice build-up—factors linked to extreme weather.
Despite this, current weather and climate models don’t account for them.
Researchers say with global warming expected to boost the release of such particles, the findings could be crucial for future forecasts.
The study is published in Climate and Atmospheric Sciences.
