Foreigners do not hike health costs

A new study from the Federal Statistical Office turns a political claim on its head. Foreigners living in Switzerland actually cost less in health insurance than Swiss citizens.

Between 2019 and 2022, average annual net cost per foreign policyholder was around CHF 2,500, compared to CHF 3,500 for Swiss nationals - a gap of 1,000 francs.

The figures directly challenge the Swiss People’s Party argument that immigration drives up healthcare spending.

But the study’s conclusion is clear - foreigners reduce average health insurance costs.
