First vote for fire payout passes

In Bern, the upper house of parliament, The Council of States, has approved emergency federal support for victims of the Crans-Montana tragedy.

By a large majority, senators backed a one-off solidarity payment of CHF 50,000 for each of the 115 injured and the families of the 41 people killed.

Lawmakers urged swift payouts this spring.

But, the chamber declined to immediately approve 20 million francs for a proposed roundtable process, saying more time was needed. The lower house votes next week.
