First day of Ukraine conference a success

The first day of the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Lugano is being described as a success.

The President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, told the conference that it’s our ‘moral obligation’ that Ukraine should be helped and reiterated the EU wants Ukraine as a member. 

She says there’s a plan for allow investments and reforms to run together and a further conference later in the year is already being planned. 

The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined by video link and told the delegates that reconstruction is a joint task for the democratic world and Russia’s attack on Ukraine is an attack on the West. 

He also invited the Swiss president, Ignazio Cassis, to visit the country so he can see for himself.
