Fight against cars trying to avoid jams

Locals in villages in cantons Valais and Vaud are frustrated by cars trying to avoid the autoroute jams.

It’s a familiar winter pattern - long traffic jams on the A9 every Friday towards Valais, and again on Sunday evenings heading back.

Around Vevey and Montreux, delays can reach 45 minutes.

Many drivers try to dodge the queues by cutting through secondary roads,  but that’s pushing congestion into villages.

Authorities in Vaud are now working with railways and tourism operators on possible solutions, including better public transport offers and staggered school holidays.
