Fewer banks in banking district - so new apartments

The banking district in Geneva is probably not worthy of its name any more – as several have moved out, or planning, to and now some buildings may be turned into high end housing.

BNP Paribas and Crédit Agricole have moved into new offices at Pont Rouge – and Lombard Odier is moving to Bellevue.

Many others have moved out over the past few years.

This means there’s space that could be redeveloped.

The Tribune de Genève reports that applications have been submitted for ten apartments to be built on land previously owned by Credit Suisse, but now UBS.

And nearby, there are plans to turn the former headquarters of the Edmond de Rothschild bank into a hotel. The developers bought the land for a reported CHF 58m.

Also earmarked for change is the current HQ for the Banque International à Luxembourg. The bank says its lease is u any way and it needs more space.

There soon won’t be many banks in the Banking District.
