Festival loses money due to free beer

Organisers of the Gurten Music Festival in Bern say over generous bar tenders are threatening the future of the event.

It's one of the biggest festivals in the country over the summer – 70,000 attend each year.

But running the bar is proving to be a challenge. Those working at the bar tend to drink plenty themselves and give away large quantities.

An analysis of this year’s event show around a million francs were lost at the bar. That’s making the event unprofitable.

Closer surveillance of the staff is needed, say the organisers.
