Fears of French nuclear power expansion near Geneva

Bugey Nuclear Power Plant - wikipedia

Canton Geneva is set to relaunch a fight with the French about the nuclear power station in Bugey – which is only about 70 km away from the border.

The plant is one of the oldest in France, running since 1978.

Geneva has been calling for the closure of the aging reactors – but now it seems the site could be redeveloped.

France considers nuclear to be sustainable and is set to expand its already extensive atomic power capability.

While the final decision where the new reactors will be built has yet to be taken, Geneva state councillor Antonio Hodgers says if Bugey was chosen, the canton would do everything it could to oppose it.

But if past attempts are a sign of how well that would go – there’s little hope Geneva could do anything about the decision.
