Escalade races go ahead - Parade cancelled

The weekend’s Escalade races went ahead smoothly.

Covid restrictions meant there were under half the amount runners than pre-pandemic days – 20,000 compared to 45,000 previously.

The start and finish lines were in a secured area, only open to those with health passes – and masks had to be worn for everyone except the runners.

Spectators were down on previous years – maybe because of the worries about the virus, more the rather unfavorable weather.

But the latest Covid rules have proved to be too much for the Escalade Parade which was due to be held this weekend. It's been cancelled. Organizers say they couldn’t be sure they could keep to the rules.

It’s the second time it has been scrapped. The 1602 Committee says it’s disappointed about the decision.
