Electric cars subject to tax from 2024

From 2024, imported electric vehicles will be taxed in line with other motor vehicles in an effort to claw back millions of francs in revenue that has been lost whilst electric vehicles have been exempt.

The Federal Council made the announcement yesterday, saying that the import tax is needed to maintain Switzerland’s road system.

From 2018 to 2022, the number of electric vehicles imported each year under the tax exemption scheme increased almost sixfold, from around 8,000 to more than 45,000. Now, 20% of the total number of vehicles imported into Switzerland are electric.

This has led to reduced revenue from vehicle tax of 78 million francs in 2022 and an estimated 100 to 150 million francs this year. The Federal Council says that it’s no longer necessary to promote electric vehicles by offering tax exemption.
