Easter holiday rush is underway, but will get worse

The Easter getaway is fast approaching — and the roads are already filling up.

Last Saturday, heavy traffic built up over the Gotthard Pass, with jams stretching more than 12 kilometres at times - a preview of what’s to come.

Authorities warn the main holiday rush is just beginning, with severe congestion expected from tomorrow afternoon to Good Friday, as commuters and holidaymakers hit the roads together.

Routes south towards Ticino - including the San Bernardino corridor - are likely to remain clogged.

The Federal Roads Office says return traffic will peak on Easter Monday, with delays continuing into the following days.

Drivers are urged to stay on the autoroutes and avoid cutting through local villages.

Rail travellers should also expect disruption, especially through major alpine tunnels.
