E-scooters could face new rules

Electric scooters are now a familiar sight, but police and parliamentarians say they’re also a growing problem.

Riders, often young, are frequently caught speeding, using pavements, or riding without the correct licence.

Cantonal police forces say they’re issuing more tickets and even impounding some scooters for excessive power or drink-driving offences.

In Bern, MPs are thinking of new rules, including helmets and licence plates.

The Federal Council is against new regulations - saying it’s a further regulatory burden on users and the industry.

The issue is set to come before parliament soon.
