E-ID delayed over fears of AI

Bern has delayed the launch of its long-awaited electronic ID over fears artificial intelligence could compromise its security.

The Federal Office of Justice says that the planned December 2026 rollout will not go ahead, with new safeguards needed against malware on user devices and against deepfakes.

A new launch date will be announced later. For residents already counting on a single digital login for public services, the wait continues.
