In the other votes, the decision on whether to bring in electronic ID was crushed. Over 64% said no and no canton wanted it either.

That again was going against the wishes of the government that wanted the system to make online interaction safer.

Opponents didn’t like the idea as it was to be run with private companies. The Socialist Party says now the law has to be re-written to make sure any electronic ID system is run only by the government.

But the one crumb of comfort for the government is voters have agreed to a new trade deal with Indonesia – although narrowly. 51.6% agreed the deal should go ahead. It’s the first-time voters have been asked to give the OK for a trade deal.

The deal was forced to a vote by environmentalists who fear the deal would mean more palm oil plantations at the expense of rain forest. Although the deal struck does have protections in place,
