Don't call an ambulance simply for being too hot

Feeling unwell in the heat is rarely a reason to call an ambulance in Switzerland, says the head of emergency medicine at Bern's Inselspital.

Thomas Sauter says people are misjudging the severity of symptoms and putting extra pressure on emergency rooms during the current heatwave.

Simple overheating and mild heat exhaustion should be treated by cooling down and drinking water, not a hospital visit.

Sunstroke with severe headache, vomiting or confusion is a genuine emergency and does need urgent care. Anyone unsure should call their family doctor or a cantonal duty-doctor line before heading to A&E.
