Desert sands give orange glow

A storm over the Alps on Saturday brought high winds, spring like temperatures and sand from the Sahara Desert.

High winds of up to 170 kph struck the peaks – the warm foehn wind pushed up temperatures to more than 16 degrees in some areas.

The storm also brought desert sand which bathed much of western and central areas in an eerie orange glow and left sand on cars and even turned some ski runs orange.

While the weekend’s effect looked dramatic – it’s not unusual, it happens about three times a year according to meteorologists.
