A deportation case is sparking controversy after the death of a 29 year old Ukrainian man who was returned from Zurich to a war zone.
Vladyslav Lanish was deported in 2024 despite a court warning the move could expose him to serious harm. He’d lived in Switzerland for more than 10 years - but struggled with drug addiction. He hadn’t fled the war.
Authorities argued he had not formally requested a delay, but the Federal Supreme Court has since criticized the decision, saying officials should have assessed potential violations of human rights.
Lanish later died in Ukraine, with reports pointing to an overdose.
The case is raising broader questions about Switzerland’s deportation policy, particularly the return of individuals to conflict zones.
