Could retirement be pushed until 70?

The government is said to be open to a new method of setting the retirement age – which could see some people working until they’re 70.

A national MP, Ruth Humbel from the Centrist Party, says the age of retirement should be linked to the amount of time worked.

She suggests a worker should be entitled to a pension after 44 years of work.

That mean someone who has had a long training or education period could be working until 70 years old – but someone in the workforce from the age of 21 will be able to stop at 65.

Before that though the people will be voting on raising the pensionable age to 66 – which then could be extended in line with increasing life expectancy.

That’s due to an initiative launched by the youth wing of the Liberal-Radical party.
