Constitution needs to change to help police

In what may seem a bizarre situation - it’s easier for a police officer in this country to search through an EU criminal database to get information of someone in Switzerland than to ask another canton.

The problem is legal - and it needs a law change.

While the cantons are working on a joint agreement - Bern is looking at a new federal law.

The Justice Minister, Beat Jans, is starting a consultation with the aim to modernise communication between cantonal forces.

It will mean a change to the constitution - so the people will have the final say.
