Doctors are raising the alarm of increasing rates of colorectal cancer in younger people – and research is underway at the Geneva University Hospital to find out why and the canton has allocated CHF 7m to boost screening.
It’s the third most common cancer in the country and it affects mainly those over 69 – but it is increasing in younger people, those under 50.
Olivier Michielin, in charge of the oncology department at Geneva Hospital, says while the numbers of younger patients remain low, they are numerous enough to be a concern.
Also, the outcome for a younger patient is poorer – as diagnosis is later.
There are calls to lower the screening age to 45 – down from the current 50.
