Coffee prices climb

Anyone filling their car up will know fuel prices are climbing right now and at the end of last year the price of croissants went up due to higher cereal costs – but now, it’s the time for coffee.

The two major supermarket chains, Coop and Migros say they will have to charge more for coffee, the main reason is a poor harvest in Brazil.

The south American country had a drought at the beginning of last year, and then frosts in June and July. Add to that shipping costs due to the pandemic means the price will have to go up in the shops.

The cost of a packet of the M-Classic in Migros is up 50 centimes to 5.40 and Lavazza Oro in Coop is up 35 centimes to 9.20.

Switzerland is one of the biggest coffee drinking nations in the world. On average 1,070 cups a year per person. The most caffeine addicted country is Norway with 1,469 cups a year.
