City council votes for new rules on late shops

There Geneva City Council has voted to bring in stricter controls on small shops that are open late.

The motion was brought in by the right-wing Swiss people’s party, but supported by left wing politicians.

The argument on the right claims the shops are sometimes the centre of illegal activity - especially selling alcohol after 9pm.

The Liberal member, Patricia Richard caused consternation by describing the shops as ‘ethnic bazaars’ – Socialist member Manuel Zwyssig called it a nauseating expression.

He says a large concern is catastrophic working conditions and poverty wages.

The motion passed by 13 votes. Any change in rules needs to be enacted by the canton.
