Chinese imports double - but new laws could hit appeal

The amount of clothes being bought from Chinese sites has more than doubled over the past year.

According to customs data, 2,000 tonnes of textiles are unloaded at Swiss airports every month.

The levels are similar now to what was arriving from China during the height of covid, but that was masks and other protective equipment.
But new customs rules may begin to hit the Chinese companies.

The United States stopped an exemption which allowed packages worth less than USD 800 to arrive customs free – but had to reverse it when backlogs occured.

The EU is looking to do something similar for parcels worth less than EUR 150 – 12 million of those arrive in the EU every day.

Swiss authorities have ended a VAT exemption for packages worth less than CHF 62.

How the new rules will affect the Chinese firms is unknown. The two biggest, Shein and Temu were looking to list on the London Stock Exchange this spring.

But the Financial Times says that’s now been put off for the time being while the impact of the new rules are assessed.
