Children infected with salmonella from Kinder chocolates

An outbreak of food poisoning from Kinder chocolates contaminated with salmonella resulted in 49 children falling ill in Switzerland last year.

-  that's according to a report by the Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs.

The report, published yesterday, said that the average age of the children who became ill was three years old.

Children in 15 cantons were affected.

At the beginning of April last year, Ferrero Suisse withdrew and recalled all Kinder brand products manufactured in the Belgian factory where the source of the salmonella was traced to. The infected chocolate was believed to have become contaminated on the milk fat production line.

Overall, 455 cases of salmonellosis due to contaminated chocolates have been identified in 17 countries. The majority involved children under the age of 10.
