Child pneumonia rises in Switerland

Mysterious pneumonia cases in children in China are making headlines around the world - but doctors in Switzerland say there’s an increase in pneumonia here.

The World Health Organisation is asking China for more details.

Patrick Meyer Sauteur from the Zurich Children’s Hospital says there’s a significant increase in pneumonia.

Before covid, the most common cause of pneumonia was a bacterial infection. But the covid restrictions made the bacteria disappear – and some wondered if it would ever return.

But it has come back – and in record amounts.

But many don’t have the antibodies to fight it.

Doctors say they’re monitoring the infections closely.
