CERN calls for new multibillion-euro tunnel

Proposed new tunnel (in red)

The particle physics laboratory CERN, has formally put forward its plan for a new accelerator which will run for 91 km under Geneva and neighbouring France.

It would seem the member countries of CERN are keen to see the multibillion-euro project go ahead as they have already decided to spend 100 million on feasibility studies.

But there are worries about how much energy the new machine would need. Some estimates say it will use the same amount of electricity as a town of half a million people.

Backers say the new tunnel is needed if Europe wants to keep its role as a physics leader as China intends to build a 100 km long accelerator.

The current accelerator is 27 km long and will reach the end of its operating life in 2041.

If given the go ahead, the new ring will open in 2045.
