An outbreak of bovine lumpy skin disease has been detected in the French department of Ain, close to the Swiss border.
Authorities announced Sunday that all cattle on the infected farm must be slaughtered to prevent further spread. The viral disease has already led to the culling of hundreds of cattle in Savoie and Haute-Savoie. It’s the first time it’s appeared in Ain.
France has intensified surveillance, restricted cattle movements, and launched a large-scale vaccination campaign covering more than 300,000 animals.
Switzerland, where no cases have been reported so far, has announced preventive vaccinations in Geneva, Vaud and parts of Valais.
