The Catholic Church in Switzerland has agreed to open up its secret archives to an independent commission investigating alleged sexual abuse.

The Bishop of Chur, Joseph Maria Bonnemain, speaking at a press conference in Lausanne yesterday says ‘it’s only fair to uncover the crimes of the past’.

The Church has agreed to have no influence on the work of the commission – which will be a six-person body led by the Swiss History Society with the University of Zurich.

Their work will start in May and it will report in the autumn of next year.
