Canton Zug is too rich

Canton Zug has a problem many of us would love to have – it has too much money.

The canton famed for its low tax rate attracts global companies to base themselves there. Over the last three years it’s made a profit of CHF 300m.

While people in other cantons are straining under the weight of higher health insurance premiums, Zug is proposing to pay all the inpatient costs for residents in the years 2026 and 2027.

That will cut premiums for residents by an average of CHF 700 a person a year.

The cantonal Health Director Martin Pfister says it’s a way to give some of the high revenue back to the residents.

The move still has to be approved by the cantonal parliament.
