Canton discusses future of newspaper

The Geneva cantonal parliament debated the future of the local paper, the ‘Tribune de Genève’ last night following a decision by the paper’s owners, the Zurich based Tamedia.

The company has announced a major restructuring which threatens jobs and the future of the printing works.

The MPs adopted a motion which asks the cantonal government to intervene with the owners to make sure those being laid off are properly supported and measures are taken to maintain the plurality of media in the region.

But the president of the Council of State, Nathalie Fontanet, says the canton can’t support a private company that pays dividends to its shareholders.

One MP called for the paper to be taken over by a foundation or private individuals.
