Campaign for same sex marriage launched

The justice minister Karin Keller-Sutter launched the campaign yesterday in support of same sex marriage.

Voters will be deciding in September.

Parliament has already passed the law, but it’s been forced to a referendum by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party.

The minister says the state shouldn’t be passing judgement on how people live their lives. But the move will have practical effect.

Couples will be able to share a name, be protected on a rental lease and pass inheritance between each other – including 2nd pillar pension funds.

But perhaps most importantly, same sex couples will be able to adopt a child. Lesbian couples will be able to benefit from sperm donation, but a gay man couple will not be able to use a surrogate as that’s illegal in Switzerland.
