Calls for funding UNRWA to be resumed

The head of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine is urging Switzerland to immediately restart payments to the organisation.

Philippe Lazzarini met with Swiss politicians in Bern.

Switzerland, like many other countries, suspended payments to UNRWA following allegations some employees were members of Hamas and involved in the massacre last October.

An investigation is underway and due to report in about a month.

Some countries and organisations have resumed support – such as the European Commission, Canada, Norway and Australia.

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs was funding UNRWA to the tune of CHF 20m a year.
