Call to ban demos in Geneva during G7

Geneva’s parliament is calling for a temporary ban on demonstrations during the upcoming G7 summit in nearby Evian-les-Bains.

Right-wing parties pushed through urgent resolutions to suspend protests for several days in June, citing fears of unrest similar to the 2003 G8 summit protests.

Supporters say the measure would ease pressure on police and prevent damage to businesses, with proposals also including compensation for those affected by any violence.

But the left has strongly opposed the move, warning a blanket ban would undermine constitutional rights and could fuel further tensions.

Cantonal minister Carole-Anne Kast says authorities are preparing for the event, urging confidence in security forces, as no final decision has yet been made.
