Swiss People’s Party National Councillor Andreas Glarner is calling for a return to higher speed limits on Swiss roads.
In a new motion, the Aargau politician demands that autoroutes revert to 130 kph and rural roads to 100, arguing that today’s limits were introduced in 1985 amid what he describes as exaggerated fears over forest dieback.
Glarner maintains that concerns about man-made climate change or habitat loss are overstated, and says reductions in air pollution no longer justify stricter limits.
But the Accident Prevention Office warns if the speed limit was increased to 130 kph, it would result in 15 additional traffic fatalities and around 100 additional serious injuries per year.
The Federal Council is now expected to review the proposal.
