Cable car crashes to the ground, killing a woman.

A cable car crashed to the ground in central Switzerland yesterday morning and a woman died.

At the Engelberg-Titlis ski resort, after a cable car detached from its line and crashed down a slope shortly before 11:30am.

Dramatic video shows the cabin tumbling repeatedly before coming to a stop. 

Police say a 61-year-old local woman, the sole occupant, died from her injuries. 

Rescue crews, including a Rega helicopter, were deployed, while other passengers were left stranded on the lift system.

Strong winds, reaching up to 84 kilometres an hour, were reported in the area. 

An investigation is now underway to determine the cause.
