Businesses that make efforts to cut their electricity consumption permanently should be exempt from any quotas that may have to be brought in to tackle shortages.
The lower house of parliament, the National Council, adopted the policy yesterday. The Upper House has yet to vote.
Experts suggest electricity shortages is one of the most serious risks the country faces.
Parliamentarian, Jörg Mäder – who introduced the motion – says if all companies introduced energy saving measures, it would save enough power to avoid any shortages until 2030.
