Switzerland’s birth rate has reached a historic low. New figures from the Federal Statistical Office show women had an average of just 1.29 children in 2024 — the lowest level ever recorded.
According to the Tribune de Genève, it’s not only couples waiting longer before having children, mainly because of career pressure, but as many as 10% of 20- to 29-year-olds actively don’t want children - ever.
Compared with Europe, Switzerland ranks among the countries with the lowest fertility rates, alongside Spain and Italy - raising long-term concerns about aging and labour shortages.
