Billionaire Indian family in court in Geneva

Members of the Indian billionaire Hinduja family will be in court in Geneva today, defending themselves against charges of human trafficking and exploitative money lending.

The family control the multinational company of the same name. They’re worth an estimated USD 20bn.

Three members of their domestic staff claim they were brought to Geneva with the aim of exploitation.

Prosecutors say they were forced to sleep in the basement and had to work every day from dawn till dusk with no days off, or overtime pay and any holidays were imposed and not paid.

Their meagre salary of only a few hundred francs a month was not always paid.

The defence is seeking an acquittal, based on what they claim is a botched investigation and a series of lies.
