Big difference in health care each side of the border

A survey shows there’s a massive difference in health care between Geneva and Vaud, and neighbouring France.

According to the Cross-Border Statistical Observatory, the Swiss side of the region concentrates three-quarters of doctors for less than half the population.

In 2025, Geneva counts 120 doctors per 10,000 inhabitants, compared with just 29 in Haute-Savoie and 18 in Ain.

Part of the problem is French trained medical professionals tend to take up employment in Switzerland - likely drawn by better pay. A quarter of doctors on the Swiss side qualified in France.
