Bern Zoo struggles with space - may have to euthanise

Bern Zoo is facing a difficult dilemma. Thanks to improved care and nutrition, animals are living longer - but that longevity is limiting space for younger generations.

A new study from the University of Zurich warns that aging zoo populations worldwide are threatening conservation goals.

Veterinarian Stefan Hoby told the Bern newspaper, Der Bund, that older animals will increasingly have to be euthanized to make room for new offspring.

Experts say European zoos aim to sustain species without taking animals from the wild - but balancing welfare and conservation is becoming harder.
