Bern wants to take control of drug supply

The federal government is looking to take direct control of the supply of pharmaceuticals into the country.

Currently, it’s the responsibility of the cantons – but there’s a lack of hundreds of basic medications.

Bern is putting forward a counter proposal to an initiative which would commit the government to promote development and production of drugs in this country.

The Federal Council says a good supply of medicine is essential for a functioning healthcare system – but they say the initiative is insufficient.

The counter proposal will give Bern the constitutional authority to ensure the basic supply of painkillers, vaccine and antibiotics.
