The government says it will spend CHF 12bn on upgrading the road network – but troublesome areas in the French speaking regions will have to wait.
The first areas to benefit from the new cash will be the autoroutes around the Bern/Wankdorf area as well as tunnels in Sankt Gallen, Basel and Schaffhausen.
The Federal Councilor, Simonetta Sommaruga, says improvements around Geneva and Lausanne are on the right track – but will have to wait.
Sommaruga also addressed the argument that building more roads just means attracting more traffic. She says that’s part of the plan. Better autoroutes should move vehicles to the main roads and away from residential streets.
