Bern to pay bulk of Cornavin expansion

New plans for Cornavin

Canton Geneva and Bern have reached an agreement on the funding to the upgrades at Cornavin station.

The Confederation seems to have been persuaded that a new underground station is needed to cope with the expected growth in traffic for the next several years.

The new station will be built under the Place de Montbrillant and will have two tracks. Original plans were for just one to save money, but planners say that won’t be enough to handle the expected capacity increases.

Bern will pay the bulk of the cost – over a billion francs. The canton will contribute CHF 319m and the City, CHF 124m.

Work should start in 2026.
