Following a case at the European Court of Human Rights, Geneva was forced to change its law on begging on the streets.
Last year the court in Strasbourg declared Geneva’s general ban on begging was too wide and had to be changed.
So, there are now specific areas where it’s not allowed. The areas around the lake, from the Baby-Plage to the Perle du Lac, has been designated a major tourist area – and so begging is banned.
Also, it’s not allowed near shops, which wipes out much of the centre of town.
But legal challenges have already been launched, as some say the areas are too big.
The new law takes effect from Saturday.
