Canton Fribourg is urging bathers to stick to official beaches this summer, warning that low water levels and rising temperatures are letting bacteria multiply in the canton's rivers and lakes.
The environment service says the canton's 3,000 kilometres of watercourses are not routinely tested, but water quality at supervised beaches is checked regularly.
State councillor Didier Castella told RTS that official beaches remain safe for swimming, while unmonitored spots carry a real health risk.
People with sensitive skin, including young children, are advised to stay out of the water, and everyone should shower after a swim.
