Basel Zoo has welcomed three African elephants from Germany, two months after its last two female elephants were transferred to parks in France.
The trio - 18-year-old Tika and her daughters Kimana, six, and Mali, three - arrived from Wuppertal Zoo on Wednesday and are being settled in by their German keepers.
The transfer was coordinated through the European breeding programme for endangered species, after Tika began challenging her mother for the dominant female role at Wuppertal.
The zoo hopes to bring in a male and resume breeding from 2027, opening a new chapter after the previous matriarch Heri died last June.
