Basel City is Swiss crime hotspot

There are calls to increase police and border guards around canton Basel-City as it remains a crime hotspot.

The latest figures show the canton keeps the dubious record it’s held for many years. In fact, last year was the worst for some time, with 12% more crimes than the year before.

Basel reports 114.8 crimes per 100,000 people – the next on the list is Geneva, with 75.5.

It’s not lost on the politicians – especially the right wing – that both cantons are border cantons.

Basel police say the canton’s location on the border with two other countries does give it an appeal to criminals.

The Swiss People’s Party says a full review is needed, including increased use of video surveillance, more police officers and engage with federal authorities to bring in more border guards.
